Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is one of those wonderful gifts of nature that you can enjoy as often as you like without worrying about side effects.

This is how to make Nigerian fruit salad.

The plate below is that of a complete fruit mix, just how I serve it periodically in Nigeria.

Natural fruits

There are lots of fruits in Nigeria, in Portharcourt where I live; you will find fruit sellers at every corner of the streets.

This article shows you how to make a fruit salad by combining some really sweet fruits together. This is a popular recipe from Nigeria.

If you look closely, it wouldn’t be hard to find your favorites fruits at the fruit market in your area.

I think watermelon comes top on my list of favorite Nigerian fruits; followed by pineapples, oranges, pawpaw, mangoes, apples – in that exact order.

I also love soursop, the problem is that it is always scarce.

I may not share the full benefits of watermelon here; but hopefully, I will do that soon.

The RRN took time for a few Sundays back to really unfold the wonder-working powers of watermelon. 😀

Whichever fruit you eat, as long as they are certified healthy, you will be good.

How Often Can I Have Fruit Salad?

I think you should try a full plate of fruit salad often; at least once in a week. It improves both psychological health and body fitness.

This page is completely about fruit salads, I have spent the last few months exploring healthy Nigerian foods.

I have also written a couple of articles on the subject which you have probably read if you are a member of the Nigerian Kitchen.

I believe healthy foods are vital for the development and health of the body cells, and we are as healthy as our body cells.

So what am I saying in a nutshell?

I say that fruits (as long as they are natural and fresh) remain top on the list of healthy foods of all time.

Starting from apples to soursop, watermelons, cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, garden eggs, they all play specific roles to our optimum health.

If you can flashback to the days of our forefather, you remember they lived longer because they consumed mostly fresh foods from the farm and lived in a less polluted environment.

The story is not the same anymore, today we live in polluted environments and eat processed nutrient-drained foods.

We feed our kids with noodles, biscuits, ice cream and think less of fresh foods.

Some of us don’t even know that Akamu (pap) is significantly better than custards. Anyway, that is a talk for another day. 😀

A plate of fruits salad should comprise at least five of your most favorite fruits, for me, it is usually, watermelon, oranges, pineapples, grapes, bananas and sometimes mangoes and apples are also added.

fruits

Did I forget to mention pawpaw? It is also a popular fruit in Nigeria.

These are Used For Fruit Salad

Pine apples

Pawpaw

Water melon

Oranges

Grapes

Banana

These fruits can be used at any proportion; it all depends on what is available to you.

Step 1

Peel off the back of the pawpaw, pineapples, oranges, and grapes, this part should be easy.

Step 2

Then chop the pineapples/paw paw/watermelon to mouth-size bits with a kitchen knife and a clean tray.

Step 3

Squeeze out the grape/orange juice and set aside in a cup.

Nigerian fruits salad is just a mixture of all those fruits together, and then just pour in the orange juice, serve with a spoon… and serve chilled.

Fruit salad

Sometimes, I also combine just two or three fruits and serve.

whole fruits

If you have a banana, you should also dice and serve it alongside the rest of the fruits.

Like I did state above, fruit salad is just a combination of fresh fruits, as much as you can find in your location.

Just make sure they taste nice when combined, and yes, try that often.

It does not just improve your health and vitality, it also tastes nice, and I like NICE 😀

I have also written lots of wonderful articles on how to improve your health by improving what you eat.

If you are a Member of the Kitchen you also must have read The Science of Healthy Nigerian book, a free eBook that you must not fail to read.

Hello, this is beautiful. But my only concern is this, in Nutrition, we’re taught that because some fruit mixtures taste well together doesn’t mean they should be mixed together to avoid digestion issues, fruits are meant to actually aid digestion but mixing together some fruits like sweet fruit and acidic fruits together in a salad causes digestion issues.

Chidi, thank you for the recipe and health benefits of fruits salad. I use skimmed milk in my fruits salad. But I like the idea of orange and grape juices, too. I will try it next time. I also add nuts(groundnuts, Cashew nuts) to my fruits salad mix. My kids simply love it. You should try it.

Nice one here, Chidi. I always love fruits salad but unfortunately, it’s difficult to preserve in the fridge. Is it better to juice or just eat raw?

Can’t wait to try your fruit salad. We have almost all these fruits year round in the SA except Watermelon and I’m not sure what Pawpaw and pap is but They recormend fruit 2twice a day here along with 2-3 vegetable servings. Very little meat only about as big as 3 by 4 in.piece. Plenty of grains as well. All fresh if possible. Thanks for the recipe for fruit salad
